Young Researchers Academy
Since the Young Researchers Academy (YRA) of Maastricht University was founded in 2009, I have been member of the Think Tank. The YRA is a community that wants to increase communication between the different research fields we have at Maastricht University. The Think Tank of YRA organizes various events, such as meetings about funding opportunities, visits to Brussels (FP7 related) or NWO, and workshops for personal development.
I feel that it is very important to educate our society about science and especially our brain. Therefore, I take part in several events related to educating children and the general public.
- Brain Awareness Week (BAW). The BAW is an initiative that originated in the United States. Once a year, in March, neuroscientists take time to improve awareness of the benefits of brain research. In the Netherlands, many researchers visit local high schools and give lectures about their neuroscientific research. I have regularly visited some high schools in the southern part of the Netherlands.
- De Jonge Akademie on Wheels. The Dutch Academy of Sciences has a division of young researchers, 'the Young Academy'. These scientists organise an event in which a group of around 30 young researchers go to high schools to educate them about science. Not only do they want to explain what science means, but they also use games and battles to show that science is actually fun. In 2011, I have participated in one of those events and visited a high school in Amstelveen. This was really very much fun and I hope to be able to join them again next year.
- Continium and Project brain. In October 2011, an exhibition started at the Continium in Kerkrade on 'Project Brain'. The faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience is going to take part in this project by giving presentations, workshops, and lab demos. I will give both presentations and demos in this project.
- January 15, 2012: Demo about memory and simultaneous EEG recording.
- March 11, 2012: Lecture about our memory and what happens if it does not function well anymore.
